14.4: Know how and when to apply the Multiplication Rule
  1. Know how to apply the Multiplication Rule for independent events
  2. Know how to apply the Multiplication Rule for non-independent events

Assessment Ideas/Questions
  1. Define a situation where the multiplication rule would be necessary to calculate probability
  2. Where in the real world would it be practical to use the multiplication rule to calculate probabilty
  3. Construct a tree diagram and use it to calculate probabilty
    1. Multiplication Rule - Multiply across
    2. Addition Rule - Add down
  4. Write and clearly explain the multiplication rule for events that are independent
  5. Write and clearly explain the multiplication rule for events that are not independent
  6. Highlight the differences between the multiplication rule for independent and non-independent events

Lessons
2. Sample Spaces
  • Generate a sample space for all possible outcomes of randomly selecting two people (14.2, 14.4)
    • Create the sample space
    • Translate to a tree

February 3,2011
  • Applied and calculated probability by creating several different scenarios showing the multiplication rule. Also took an assessment on chapter 14 to see the progress of the students and their knowledge.
  • After Chapter 14 assessment, reviewed how to calculate probability from a tree diagram, multiplying across the tree in order to figure out the probability of obtaining each result in the sample space.
